My Thoughts on the The Zimmerman Verdict

After the verdict this weekend I have heard many insensitive comments including the same ol’ same ol’ “get over it”. We don’t need to get over it we need to deal with it, deal with these racial issues in real substantive way, real discussions that means there will be some cussing some anger but it is well past time that people discuss the racial history of this country in diverse groups and in a brutally honest way. The unequal access to education and the unequally in the justice system that brought the feelings of this weekend to the surface. Because the reality is these feelings have been under the surface since the last highly publicized unjust verdict which was almost 21 years ago. The Rodney King verdict didn’t set the stage for this but was just a conformation of what went on before the height in the civil rights movement and during and sadly after. To sum my thoughts up on this whole thing is we keep hearing about how America is supposed to be a melting pot that has not fully come to fruition until we deal with each other in real way and realize that we as one nation can not make it without one another………………..

Mistajay: What is the story and conception behind your emcee name?

JayZeno: Well, my neighborhood homies call me JayZeno which eventually shortened to Zeno… one day I looked it up… just fucking around… found out it meant “Gift from the Gods”. I was like word that hard AF… Especially since I have a thing for Roman & Greek Mythology. I threw the ruler behind it & it just fit.

Mistajay: What area are you reppin? What is the hip hop scene like there?

JayZeno: I was born in Brooklyn NY. I relocated to a small town called North in South Carolina with my Grandma when I was like 10yrs old. The Hip Hop scene is non-existent in the small town I’m from.

Mistajay: What are your influences of your music? And what inspires you?

JayZeno: My music is inspired by my life… my observations of everything around me & occasionally good weed…lol but personally I am inspired by the belief that I am meant to do something great. The universe blesses you with talent to master it & use it… that’s what I’m trying to do.

Mistajay: How do you describe your style?

JayZeno: My music style is the best blend of east coast & southern hip hop… I can give you the southern catchy hook & turn around on the same track & spit a 90’s hip hop uptown 16 bars… & vice versa.

Mistajay: What is your best song recorded to date and why?

JayZeno: I’d have to say my mixtape track “Just lose” because it raw emotion..storytelling type track… when you listen to it you can imagine yourself there.. in the moment… I love painting pictures.

Mistajay: If you could share the stage with any 3 artists or bands who are still around and touring, who would they be and why?

JayZeno: Nas because I feel like he is hip hop legend a true MC. I know I would learn so much just being in his presence. T.I. Because I’m a fan & he has held down the top spot in the south so long… I would love to witness that every night. Lupe Fiasco because again I am a fan but he also isn’t afraid to be different… he makes music for his fanbase not concerned with appealing the masses.. its inspiring.

Mistajay: A lot of artists come into the game with a lot of ambition but don’t spend time learning the business side. How important to you is learning about publishing and royalties?

JayZeno: It is maaad important because publishing is the real money in this game. Artist aren’t selling records anymore & if they are that’s money you are splitting with labels managers etc. This game isn’t kind in anyway no one is going to give you yours you gotta get. Making sure that paperwork is straight & all your bread is accounted for is a must.

Mistajay: Where do you see the hip hop going in 2013? How do you see yourself fitting into

JayZeno: I don’t see hip hop changing to much this year. A couple fads… here today gone tomorrow artist alongside the lyrical real hip hop cats & songwriters just like every other year. Lol I don’t see myself fitting into it… I’m trying to stand out… but being a female spitting the way I do… just being me.. I don’t think it will be hard.

Mistajay: What are your future plans?

JayZeno: Well right now I’m getting ready to drop my single “Don’t Do it” on DGM entertainment… kinda test the waters a bit… I am currently working on my next mixtape “Tryna Be Great” which will drop later this summer… as for the future I just want to make good music.

Mistajay: Any last thoughts?

JayZeno: over Everything… lol

Mistajay: Where can fans follow you and get your music?

JayZeno: They can follow me on twitter @ihoodscholar & check out my music @ or
