pennjamin bannekar Underground Experience 10 14 013

What is the story and conception behind your emcee name?

My name has evolved over the years. I began as Big Penn then I later dropped the ‘Big’ and it was just Penn. Soon after I added ‘the god’ to Penn to form Penn the god.  That name stuck for awhile until my friends started calling me Pennjamin Bannekar in honor of Benjamin Banneker.  I hated it at first but one day, I fell in love with it and I see no changes to it any time soon.

What area are you reppin? What is the hip hop scene like there?

I’m reppin Chicago. Chicago is home to me.  I lived in Atlanta for a year so I’m kinda out of the loop of what the Chicago hip hop scene is like these days but past experiences would have me say I wish that it was more united.

What are your influences of your music? And what inspires you?

My biggest musical influence is Michael Jackson.  That’s the primary reason that I fell in love with music.  However, my biggest rap influences would be in the likes of Andre 3000, college dropout’s Kanye West, Elzhi, and Jay-Z.  One of my more recent favorites is J. Cole.  Nowadays, I’m more inspired by the concept of making good music and my fans.  Before, I think I was more so inspired by proving people wrong about my ability which can be good in a sense, but it took a heavy toll on me when I felt I didn’t get the recognition I deserved.

You can see the thought behind “Over Drive” as he crafts a vivid story of what life is like for you, ” His lead single “Set It Off” that tells the story of a misogynistic reality of some women. …..So how do you describe your style exactly? What is your best song recorded to date and why?

My manager describes my style as ILLwrite-R&B thug lol. I guess I would have to stick with that description until I find a better way of describing it. ILLwrite is probably my best song from front to back to date that the public has heard.  I have some other stuff in the catalog that I would consider to be in the conversation of best song but I’ll stick with ILLwrite for now.

You first gained notoriety with the group Project: Fr3sh… If you could share the stage with any 3 artists or bands who are still around and touring, who would they be and why?

Michael Jackson. Kanye. Jay-Z. They are all amazing performers so it would be a dream come true to be able to rock with them on stage.

A lot of artists come into the game with a lot of ambition but don’t spend time learning the business side. How important to you is learning about publishing and royalties?

I would encourage any artist to educate themselves on those 2 issues. I have a well informed team around me that constantly sends me articles to read about the business side of music.  Although some of the reads can’t compare to the actual art of making music and writing songs, the knowledge gained can only help you in the long run.

Where do you see the hip hop going in 2013? How do you see yourself fitting into that?

I haven’t really thought about the entire landscape of hip hop in 2013 much lately.  I kinda just like to focus on my lane and how I can improve on what I’m doing in my lane.  It seems that I lose focus when I examine the hip hop scene as a whole so I like to keep my blinders on at times.

What are your future plans? Any last thoughts?

I’m concentrating on finishing my 2nd solo project, Long Live Bannekar and preparing to hit the stage again.

Where can fans follow you and get your music?
