sean strange Underground Experience Feature 4/29/016

Mistajay: What is the story and conception behind your emcee name?

SEAN STRANGE: The story behind my name is pretty simple. Years back when I first started writing and producing, A friend gave me the name “Doctor Strange”. Later on down the line I saw other artists using that name and it didn’t sit right with me. Plus I wanted my name to reflect me personally. So I kept the “Strange” in the name and replaced “Doctor” with my real name “Sean”. Sometimes I will call myself “Sean Michael” as an alias which is my first and middle name together.

Mistajay: What area are you reppin? What is the hip hop scene like there?

SEAN STRANGE: I am from Queens, New York. These days I honestly can not tell you what the scene is like in Queens. But I can tell you that there are many people residing in Queens & all over New York that make music and are on the grind. That never changes. But I spent many years in the New York scene on the come up. I have performed at hundreds of clubs, venues and festivals in New York over the years. But I also in the last few years focused on covering other ground outside of NYC like: Europe, Canada and the rest of the USA. I do still go hard as I can on New York radio stations like Shade 45 & the college circuit.

Mistajay: What are your influences of your music? And what inspires you?

SEAN STRANGE: I think the number one inspiration for me is life and experience. I use that as my number one driving force to create and work hard. The thought of not having or not pushing hypes me up and pushes me to earn. And create something with real substance & family. As far as the musical inspiration I am inspired by so many artists from so many genres. My playlist’s are filled with everything from: Jay Z to Portishead to Van Morrison to The Roots to Eminem to Gil Scott Heron. I love all types of music. Also something that has inspired me since a child is the Rocky films and scores from them. when I am working on a new album or project, Sometimes I will watch the whole Rocky saga in constant rotation in the background while I write. It sounds crazy but it pushes me to be great. . .

Mistajay: How do you describe your style?

SEAN STRANGE: If I had to pick one word that describes my style I would say “Honest”. I wouldn’t even sit here and give some crazy definition of my style. I say what’s on my mind, I am who I am and I take the craft and art of being an emcee and producer extremely serious. And I have nothing in common with those who don’t.

Mistajay: In 2010 you released your debut solo album “Street Urchin” to critical acclaim & In 2013 you released a full length album with hip hop legend and pioneer PMD of the world famous rap group EPMD titled “Welcome To The Goondox” and made time to release two free album releases in 2012 and 2014 titled “Truth Serum” and “Subliminal Facebook Comments” What is your best song/project recorded to date and why?

SEAN STRANGE: It would be very hard for me to pick a best project or song. I think each one is special in it’s own way and shows a different side of what I can do. The other projects were solo so they were different from “Goondox” And in the case of that is was a group with PMD & Snowgoons and I enjoyed it cause we all adjusted to each other styles in some way. I really navigated that album from start to finish. Something I am proud of. I put the 2 others out for Free to thank the fans for supporting the store releases and to also create more buzz around my name and fans.

Mistajay: You have recently been on tour with Chris Rivers how has the tour been received? If you could share the stage with any 3 artists or bands who are still around and touring, who would they be and why?

SEAN STRANGE: The tour was a success and next we head to Canada in June for 15 shows and then will follow up with another Europe tour in the Fall. As for the second half of the question, I have opened up and actually shared sets with many legends and artists I grew up listening too like: Nas, Wu Tang Clan, D12, The Roots, Redman, Onyx & More. I actually during the Goondox times was asked to join the Hit Squad Reunion with EPMD, Redman, Das Efx, K Solo, Dj Scratch & Keith Murray as part of the crew set at Rock The Bells and other states as well in 2012/2013 and it was an honor.

Mistajay: A lot of artists come into the game with a lot of ambition but don’t spend time learning the business side. How important to you is learning about publishing and royalties?

SEAN STRANGE: Learning the business, what to do and not do is essential. I have been learning since day one and even took college courses in music theory, music business, independent record production and more. Plus I step by step taught myself to book tour all over the world, obtain my own distribution deal, radio placement and to run an independent company. Every situation presents a new lesson. Even with the knowledge things can get tricky when it comes to collecting royalties but if you stay alert and on track you can protect yourself.

Mistajay: Where do you see the hip hop going in 2016? How do you see yourself fitting into that?

SEAN STRANGE: Honestly, I don’t even care anymore. This year is strictly bout having my label step up one or two levels above where we are now. I am dropping a brand new album this year, Something my fans will go crazy over and many other treats. In Hip Hop of this generation, Nothing surprises me. There is no boundaries, So I just focus on mine.

Mistajay: What are your future plans?

SEAN STRANGE: I have many great things coming this year. Big features, New album, Another world tour and much more. Stay Tuned. The next project up is the label Compilation titled “Everything Is Nah Bro”

Mistajay: Any last thoughts?
