Mistajay: What is the story and conception behind your producer name?

Kidd called Quest: I use to go by the name Jay-Quest but had to switch it because, there was a few other dudes that was going by the same name. One of the guys was taking credit for the stuff I was doing and another dude was doing some bullshit. People was getting me mixed up with the other guys it was a real headache. I finally got fed up with the confusions and said thats it I’m changing my name. It was hard because a lot of people already knew me by the name quest so I had to keep that name so that’s when I decided to go by the name “KiDD Called Quest” I knew no one would try to use that name.

Mistajay: What area are you reppin? What is the hip hop scene like there?

Kidd called Quest: I from Rochester a city located in the upstate New York area. The music scene is just like everywhere else you go. You have the trend followers and the artist that just do them, This city is full of talented artist and producers.

Mistajay: What are your influences of your music? And what inspires you?

Kidd called Quest: My influences are Hi Tek, Premier, Rza, DITC ect… my list can go on for days. I get inspired by hearing good music and watching others do their thing and making moves and winning .

Mistajay: How do you describe your style?

Kidd called Quest: My style is sound gritty and some, say at times it is dark I just just do me. I was known for chopping up and flipping soul and rock samples,  I use  more 808s and other sounds now.  I changed up my sound  so it would  stand out and appeal to everyone. I do me and try not to sound like what the next person is already doing.

Mistajay: Along the path to becoming a successful producer, he has faced several challenges. Two of which was the losing of the original version of his debut album Put Your Headphones On and the loss on 1,000 instrumentals please let us in more on this story.

Kidd called Quest: not much to tell

Mistajay: You have produced for such notable young and legendary artists such as Curtis Williams (of Two-9), Emillio Rojas, and Big Shug from the Gang Star Foundation. What is your best song produced to date and why?

Kidd called Quest: Honestly I can’t say any track I produced is better or the best because every joint I do I make to fit perfect with the person I’m working with.

Mistajay: You have released his 3rd solo album, Put Your Head Phones On 2. The title of the album has a deeper meaning than most would anticipate can you break that down a bit further?

Kidd called Quest: The tittle is telling people to go check out music yourself instead of going off of other people opinions and thoughts about music. Because a lot of people are silly when it comes to expressing their thoughts and feeling about music. We are in a time period where people are expecting too much or don’t know what they want when it comes to music, and is quick to say something is awful when they only check about 30 seconds of a song before skipping to the next track. I say just listen to stuff on your own to see if it’s something you like or not.

Mistajay: If you could produce any 3 artists or bands who are still around and touring, who would they be and why?

Kidd called Quest: tooo many to name….

Mistajay: Besides being an excellent producer, you are also a successful entrepreneur. He has sold over 5,000 instrumental CDs on his own showing that even in this era when most content is given away for free, people will still support the music that speaks to them. A lot of artists come into the game with a lot of ambition but don’t spend time learning the business side. How important to you is learning about publishing and royalties?

Kidd called Quest: It’s very important just know that’s what’s going to keep you going when the time to do music full time comes.

Mistajay: You have a 5th fully self-produced compilation “SAMPLEHOLIC 2″. A collection of new, unreleased and throw back songs produced by the up in coming Rochester producer. This compilation has appearances from artist such as G.Fisher, Averx, Reks, Vice Souletric , Rapper Big Pooh, CRAIG G, PUMPKINHEAD and many more. What was  your inspiration for this album?

Kidd called Quest: I just wanted to put something out for the new listeners to back track and catch up on and my previous listeners to hear some new stuff. I this project was something I put together in like a week but it came out hot and the people who heard it appreciated it.

Mistajay: Where do you see the hip hop going in 2017? How do you see yourself fitting into that?

Kidd called Quest: I really can’t can’t say but hopefully it be going into a great direction. I hope to continue to contribute good music and build up new fans and get closer to working with some legends and big names .

Mistajay: What are your future plans?

Kidd called Quest: Continue to contribute good music and projects i have a few beat tapes i will be releasing soon.
