Mistajay: What is the story and conception behind your emcee name?

BRM: BRM is the initials to Brandon R Music…but also a BRM is a agent for change. Which is exactly what I want my music to be. A positive change in someones life or heart. And hopefully my music also points people to GOD. Where he can bring about the ultimate change is someones life.

Mistajay: What area are you reppin? What is the hip hop scene like there?

BRM: I rep A-Town, Aurora, IL. Music scene is hot here. As the talent of the artists in this city and the surrounding cities is off the chain. Artists as myself, Hilgy, Jaooo, J. Love, Boston, Michael Schramm Jr, Stevo, Anthony Rocco, Torrianteres Taylor and so many others rep the area.

Mistajay: What are your influences of your music? And what inspires you?

BRM: God is a huge influence of my music. Without him there wouldn’t be my music or a ministry. Testimony and experiences of my life is a big part of my music as well. I want people to hear my music and think man this guy loves GOD, I should look into a relationship with him. Or sometimes listeners may just hear the music and think I like the passion coming from this guys music. Musical influences come from older guys like Canibus, Eminem, Ludacris, Jay Z, and newer gen guys like Lecrae, NF, and Social Club Misfits. Also just good old fashion wanting to be great at what I do drives me as well.

Mistajay: How do you describe your style?

BRM: I feel like my style can be energetic but also dial back to tell you a story. Can hit you with metaphors and punch lines or break down a lesson I learned in life. I wouldn’t describe my style to fit in a box or one category, I feel like I bring multiple styles to the table. I love working with an epic type beat, Trap style, or a piano classic type flow as well.

Mistajay: You’re a Christian rapper but you bring a lot of energy and real life into your songs, what if any are some challenges that you have faced?

BRM: In writing a song or a verse sometimes I run into trouble with how much FUN and PUNCHLINES  I should put into a verse instead of putting the sole focus on GOD. A lot of my music I have no issue with that as I may be sharing a testimony about what GOD has done in my life. Talking about how GOD has saved my life and I praise him in my lyrics in fresh new ways! BUT, I also like to have fun with my music as well, like any classic rapper, letting everyone know that YOU GOT FLOW, GAME, LYRICS, and you coming hard :) I enjoy a good line about how my music is coming at you, and I’m not worried bout what other people think. I don’t know if this has ever affected me personally, but maybe people sometimes won’t give the music a chance if they hear its about GOD and thats not really their thing. I pray my music can help bridge that gap :)

Mistajay: You just released a free album called “CLIMBING” What is your best song recorded to date and why?

BRM: That is a tough question for me because each of the songs if special to me. Reached Your Limit and Moment of Silence are testimony tracks that speak about my life and how GOD pulled me out of a selfish life. The track “CLIMBING” I love love the lyrics and rhyme style I put on that one, with a coming at you type lyric. But one of my favorite tracks on the album might be LEAVE ME ALONE FEAT HILGY. That track was written from a very honest point of view, which talks about wanting to be left alone. We all get in that place where we are tired of all the noise, distractions and temptations all around us. I felt like the hook was super catchy, I sang it pretty well, and the rapping by myself and Hilgy blended together perfect.

Mistajay: If you could share the stage with any 3 artists or bands who are still around and touring, who would they be and why?

BRM: NF - I love his energy, flow, lyrics, and honesty about current and past issues etc. I think he is a awesome talent. Social Club Misfits - I like their style. They don’t try and fit in and they make songs I could see myself doing. Also like their flow, lyrics etc.

The 3rd would be someone like a Ed Sheeran who is super talented or Christian Worship bands like Hillsong United or Crowder, I am a fan of all types of music.

Mistajay: A lot of artists come into the game with a lot of ambition but don’t spend time learning the business side. How important to you is learning about publishing and royalties?

BRM: Over the years I have learned about promoting my own music. Also about what are the best ways to get my music out to people so they can hear it. Learning about different streaming services etc. Publishing and royalties is a cool thing as well if your really wanting to drive money in from your music. I honestly am more concerned with people HEARING my music and enjoying it. So I want to know all the best ways to get it out in the ears of the people.

Mistajay: Where do you see the hip hop going in 2018? How do you see yourself fitting into that?

BRM: I believe hip hop is headed down a path of more conscience positive type music. With so many social issues going on in the world I believe people want to hear about hope and change. Which is great for artists and people like myself. But my focus will always be about lifting GOD up and speaking about trials I have gone through and the joys of what I now experience.

Mistajay: What are your future plans?

BRM: My future plans will consist of reaching out to artists and working with them. I believe a big thing in music should be working with each other. Collaborating with like minded people on music and projects. That is what I want to do. Also what comes along with Christian music is a chance for ministry. I look forward to speaking with more and more people (youth, adults, etc) about my life and what GOD has done in and through me to change my life around.

Mistajay: Any last thoughts?

BRM: I’m always in awe of the great talent in the music industry. For everyone out there who has a passion, keep pursing and keep dreaming. And to remember don’t put your whole identity into what it is you are, what your job is, what your good at. To remember first and foremost we are ALL children of GOD first, everything else can be taken away in the blink of an eye, but his LOVE will ALWAYS be there for us.
