Mistajay: What is the story and conception behind your Art/band name? Introducing DEF MACHINE, a dynamic music production team renowned for its versatility across various genres of American music. Established around 2013 by Detroit's esteemed musicians and songwriters, Avery A. Sims and Craig "Mr. Groove" Lane, DEF MACHINE brings a fusion of heavy metal, hip hop, R&B, funk, Kountry, and pop music styles to the forefront of the industry. With a commitment to innovation and creativity, DEF MACHINE continues to captivate audiences with its unique sound and unparalleled musical expertise.
Mistajay: What area are you reppin? What is the hip hop scene like there? "DEF MACHINE hails from Detroit, Michigan—the same city that gave us Eminem, Big Sean, 42 Dugg, and Soda Baby, along with many other home grown local artists."
Mistajay: What are your overall influences of your music? And what inspires you? "I’ve been influenced by artists like George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, as well as the entire Motown era. I’m inspired by creating new bass licks and experimenting with innovative sounds."
Mistajay: You specialize in multi genre of music Nu- metal / Hip Hop R&B / Funk / Pop / Country Rap / MOD How do you describe your style of music in One word? Good Music
Mistajay: You are releasing New Double CD Album title; AMERICA The Good The Bad The Ugly What is your best song recorded to date and why? "The song 'Break Thru' is the standout track on the album. Its message really sets a high bar and makes it one of the best songs we’ve recorded."
Mistajay: If you could work with any other 3 artists or bands who are still around and touring, who would they be and why? "If Amp Fiddler were alive today, he would be an artist we’d love to collaborate with due to his inventive keyboard work, which would add a new dimension to our recordings. Prince would also be a dream collaborator, as his innovative production would blend spectacularly with our sound. And of course, working with Michael Jackson would be incredible, given his legendary status as the King of Pop."
Mistajay: A lot of artists/producers come into the game with a lot of ambition but don’t spend time learning the business side. How important to you is learning about publishing and royalties? "It's crucial for us to grasp all aspects of the music industry's business side. Understanding this helps avoid the pitfalls of bad deals that can hinder creativity if you're overly bogged down by business concerns."
Mistajay: Where do you see the hip hop going in 2024? How do you see yourself fitting into that? "I envision Hip Hop making a strong presence at award shows, winning major accolades. I see DEF MACHINE right there at the forefront with our new album, sharing in that success."
Mistajay: How has covid 19 situation affected your plans as related to music? "COVID-19 has had minimal impact on our recording process. In fact, much of our material was created during the pandemic, so if anything, it served as an inspiration for parts of our new album, which is set to drop next year."
Mistajay: What are your other future plans? "We’re putting the finishing touches on the album as we prepare for its release in the first quarter of 2025."
